Moms We Love: Carrie Steffe

How did you get your start in photography?
I have a degree in teaching, but I worked part-time in a pharmaceutical company. I was dabbling in photography on the side because I enjoyed it. I would take pictures of my kids and the neighbors’ kids. It got to the point that my photography started looking like portraits, so a neighbor suggested that I start my own business. So I walked into my job one day, which I hated, and told my boss I was quitting. And I never looked back. That day, I registered my business with the state. My neighbors started referring me, and by the second week, I already had a booked schedule for the holidays!

Moms We Love: Jennifer Gault-Varner

Pure-e-commerce Jennifer Gault-Varner

Founder: Pure-Ecommerce

Let’s talk about your background.
I was a stay-at-home mom, and like a bazillion other moms who stay at home, I wanted to work. My husband had come down with colon cancer three weeks after we got married. We were told we couldn’t have kids. For some reason, being told that festered an enormous interest in baby products and maternity clothes. I developed a huge passion for it. I got pregnant during my husband’s treatment, which was a blessing. After his treatment, I knew his chances of beating colon cancer were 50-50. I thought, “Am I going to be a single mom one day?”

Founder of Power Women Magazine and Radio Show

How did Power Women Magazine & Radio Show come to be?
I had my own medical staffing agency. I worked with 1099 subcontractors, and had between 50-60 girls who worked with me. I was rockin’ and rollin’! I was bringing in great money and actually getting my name out there. Then, one of the girls I hired stole my business out from under me. I lost my business and I almost lost my home.

Did you always have an entrepreneurial spirit?
Not at all. My mom was a stay-at-home mom, and I wanted to be like her. I was very much into my career, but the moment I had my first daughter, I stopped working and never looked back. So when the idea for Grill Charms happened, it blind-sided me.
